McMurdo Station Photos

This tracked vehicle is called a Pisten Bully. It's designed to travel on ice and snow, and thus, is perfect for the sea ice. It has two drawbacks. It's ride is incredibly rough, even on flat ice, and it is painfully slow. The top speed is 10-15 mph.

Observation Hill is in the background and at the top is the cross dedicated to Scott, Wilson, Bowers, Oates, and Evans, who died in 1911 returning from the South Pole. Carved in the wood is a line from Tennyson's Ulysses, "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."

This is the heart of McMurdo Station, facing Derelict Junction. The large buildings in the distance are dorms. Note the insulated water pipes in the foreground. McMurdo gets its water from the sea and converts the sea water into fresh water using three huge reverse osmosis units.
